Turkish Van
The Turkish Van is a strong, agile cat from eastern Anatolia. Its usually pale body carries colour chiefly on head and tail; some individuals enjoy water games.

Affectionate and active
A Turkish Van often follows familiar people around the home and investigates new things closely. It may be friendly without enjoying long spells in someone’s arms. Stroking on the cat’s terms works better than holding on. Other pets may live well with it when introductions are slow and everyone has secure places. Plan daily play and allow quiet time between sessions.
Jumping and perhaps splashing
The Van jumps high on strong legs, and some cats retrieve a ball during play. Provide sturdy climbing routes and secure windows and balconies. Not every Turkish Van likes water. If your cat shows interest, you can offer a little water in a shallow dish. Stay with her and never force her into water. Short hunting games and different lookout spots add variety. Summer coat and winter coat
The soft, semi-long coat has no dense undercoat. It grows fuller in winter and lighter in summer. Weekly combing is often enough; add a session during shedding or when the winter coat is dense. Check behind the front legs and at the tail base for knots. Baths are unnecessary even for a cat that sometimes plays in water.
Strong cat from Lake Van
The breed comes from the region around Lake Van in eastern Turkey. The body is large, long and strong, with a broad chest and bushy tail. Classically, most of the coat is white with coloured areas on head and tail; the International Cat Association (TICA) also describes entirely white cats. Eyes may be amber, blue or different colours. A Van grows slowly and often takes several years to reach full maturity.
Protect pale skin from sun
Strong sun can burn lightly pigmented skin on the ears and nose, especially in very pale cats. Keep the cat indoors during strong midday sun and provide shade. Ask your vet to recommend a cat-safe sunscreen. Do not use human sunscreen without veterinary advice, as some ingredients are toxic to cats. Redness, crusts or sores that do not heal need examination. Also ask for the parents’ health records when choosing a kitten. Its substantial build and seasonally changing coat make regular weight checks useful.
