Where its people are
A Burmese often seeks the nearest available lap and speaks up in a fairly soft voice. It enjoys company and games with its people. If it regularly spends many hours alone, it may miss the company it seeks. Children can play with the cat, as long as they let it leave the game and keep its sleeping place undisturbed.
Play and puzzles together
Many Burmese enjoy small learning games. Hide a toy in plain sight under a cloth and make the search harder only once the cat understands the game. A ball to bring back or a simple food puzzle that lets the cat scoop out part of its daily food with a paw can work too. These games let the cat search, chase and solve small tasks with you. Silky coat, simple care
The short, silky coat lies close to the body and has little undercoat. Brush once a week with a soft rubber grooming brush to remove loose hair. This is also a chance to look at ears, claws and teeth. Frequent bathing is unnecessary; it matters more that the cat becomes comfortable with gentle handling and small care routines.
Compact and surprisingly strong
The Burmese is medium-sized but its firm, muscular body can feel surprisingly heavy. A rounded head, developed cheeks and large gold eyes create its distinctive expression. The original dark sable is only one recognised colour; blue, chocolate, lilac and other shades also occur. In young cats, the face, legs and tail are often darker than the body. The body colour deepens as the coat matures.
Heart screening and genetic tests
The International Cat Association (TICA) recommends screening Burmese cats for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). This condition thickens the heart muscle. A heart ultrasound can show changes before the cat looks unwell. Ask for current results for breeding cats; a normal examination does not rule out disease developing later.
Genetic tests are also available for GM2 gangliosidosis and inherited Burmese hypokalemia. In GM2 gangliosidosis, metabolic waste accumulates in nerve cells and permanently damages them. Affected kittens can develop tremors and gradually lose control of their movements. In inherited hypokalemia, blood potassium levels fall intermittently. This can cause muscle weakness, such as a lowered head or difficulty walking. Such changes need veterinary assessment.
Ask for both parents’ written results. Each test examines a particular change in DNA, the inherited genetic information. Cats with one copy are carriers: they do not develop the tested form of the condition but can pass the change on. Two carriers of the same change can produce affected kittens. A clear genetic result replaces neither heart ultrasound nor routine veterinary care.
