Small body, individual character
The Mexican companion breed comes in smooth- and long-coated varieties. A tiny frame can hold a great deal of independence, uncertainty or curiosity.
Everyday life
Several short walks and play sessions often work better than one long outing. Their size makes safe introductions to larger dogs and clear retreat spaces important. PDSA describes very limited tolerance for being left alone.
When you need to go out
Being alone needs gradual practice. The RSPCA advises no more than four hours at a time; puppies and some adults need much shorter intervals. Arrange company during longer absences.
Day-to-day care
Brush smooth coats weekly and longer coats several times a week. Keep an eye on teeth, knees and eyes; their small jaws can make dental care more involved.
Size and build
PDSA gives an adult weight range of 1.8 to 2.7 kg. Both coat types share similar needs, but build and temperament vary from dog to dog.
Health
PDSA lists kneecap luxation, hip and eye conditions, heart disease, tracheal collapse and dental problems. Ask about heart, eye and knee screening when researching a dog’s background.
