A companion in everyday life
Shih Tzus were kept as companions in Tibet. They are often alert and keen to learn. Rewards and consistent rules work better than harsh corrections.
Everyday life
Plan several walks, play and short learning sessions. PDSA recommends an hour of daily exercise. A small dog still needs an undisturbed bed and a gradual plan for time alone.
When you need to go out
Being alone needs gradual practice. The RSPCA advises no more than four hours at a time; puppies and some adults need much shorter intervals. Arrange company during longer absences.
Day-to-day care
The long coat needs daily brushing and mats easily. Many owners choose regular clipping. Pay particular attention to the corners of the eyes and hair around the mouth.
Size and build
PDSA gives an average shoulder height of about 27 cm and a lifespan of over ten years. Neither figure is a promise for an individual dog.
Health
Listed concerns include breathing, eye, dental and disc problems. A short muzzle can affect breathing. Discuss health screening and facial structure with a vet.
