Small, confident and curious
Westies were bred to hunt small animals. They are often lively and people-focused, yet can be alert and vocal.
Everyday life
An hour of exercise, scent games and reliable recall practice provide a useful routine. Plan calm breaks and adult supervision with children.
When you need to go out
Being alone needs gradual practice. The RSPCA advises no more than four hours at a time; puppies and some adults need much shorter intervals. Arrange company during longer absences.
Day-to-day care
Brush the dense coat several times a week and arrange regular trimming. Pay particular attention to skin, ears and eyes.
Size and build
Measurements describe adult dogs and are a guide. Lines and individuals can vary; ask about the parents’ health, temperament and daily life.
Health
PDSA lists skin allergies, eye conditions and Westie lung as potential concerns. Have symptoms checked by a vet and ask about family history.
