Bold, quick and keen to chase
Jack Russell Terriers were bred to work around foxes. Many are lively and clever. Chasing wildlife is part of the breed’s background, not a training failure.
Everyday life
Build daily movement, scent games and short training sessions into the routine. Use secure off-lead areas until recall works reliably around distractions.
When you need to go out
Being alone needs gradual practice. The RSPCA advises no more than four hours at a time; puppies and some adults need much shorter intervals. Arrange company during longer absences.
Day-to-day care
Smooth coats usually need a weekly brush. Rough coats may need professional stripping. Both varieties shed.
Size and build
These figures describe adults. Their compact build can disguise stamina and prey drive. Ask which coat variety and temperament the parents have.
Health
PDSA lists kneecap luxation, primary lens luxation, ataxia and Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease. Ask to see relevant eye examinations and genetic screening results.
