Attentive, gentle and quick to learn
Shelties are playful and often responsive to their surroundings. Positive socialisation helps them approach new people and situations with confidence.
Everyday life
Offer daily activity, short training sessions and practice settling. Distance and a quiet retreat can help in busy settings.
When you need to go out
Being alone needs gradual practice. The RSPCA advises no more than four hours at a time; puppies and some adults need much shorter intervals. Arrange company during longer absences.
Day-to-day care
Brush the dense coat several times a week and more during shedding. Check for tangles behind the ears and around the legs.
Size and build
Measurements describe adult dogs and are a guide. Lines and individuals can vary; ask about the parents’ health, temperament and daily life.
Health
PDSA lists concerns including collie eye anomaly, progressive retinal atrophy and hip dysplasia. Ask about relevant eye, hip and family-line checks.
