The Mittelspitz is the medium variety of the German Spitz. It is lively and people-focused; its alertness can show up as frequent barking.
Everyday life
Walks and daily mental tasks work better than relying on garden time alone. Practise a calm response to visitors, secure doors and provide quiet space.
When you need to go out
Being alone needs gradual practice. The RSPCA advises no more than four hours at a time; puppies and some adults need much shorter intervals. Arrange company during longer absences.
Day-to-day care
Brush the thick coat daily, especially behind the ears and around the ruff. Grooming takes longer during seasonal shedding.
Size and build
Measurements describe adult dogs and are a guide. Lines and individuals can vary; ask about the parents’ health, temperament and daily life.
Health
PDSA lists luxating patellas as a potential health concern. Discuss screening options with a vet or breed club.
