Calm, friendly and led by scent
Basset Hounds are often gentle and easy-going but enjoy following an interesting trail. Their low build makes weight and movement worth monitoring.
Everyday life
Plan an hour of moderate exercise and extra scent games. Use a secure lead and allow off-lead time only in fenced areas.
When you need to go out
Being alone needs gradual practice. The RSPCA advises no more than four hours at a time; puppies and some adults need much shorter intervals. Arrange company during longer absences.
Day-to-day care
Brush the short coat weekly. Keep skin folds dry and check long ears regularly without over-cleaning them.
Size and build
Measurements describe adult dogs and are a guide. Lines and individuals can vary; ask about the parents’ health, temperament and daily life.
Health
PDSA flags exaggerated physical features and lists concerns including elbow dysplasia, IVDD, skin and eye problems. Maintaining a healthy weight is especially important.
