Large companion with Japanese roots

American Akita

The American Akita is a large, powerful dog with a broad head, upright ears and a dense coat. It can be deeply attached to its family while being less comfortable around unfamiliar dogs. Experienced handling and thoughtful arrangements for walks, visitors and temporary care are important.

A powerful companion with an independent nature

The American Akita and Japanese Akita share their early history. Dogs from Japan’s Akita region were used for hunting and later bred for dog fighting. After the Second World War, American servicemen brought Akitas to the United States. Breeders there developed a more substantial type, while breeding in Japan followed a different direction. The international kennel organisation FCI now recognises them as separate breeds.

The American Akita has a broad head, small upright ears and a tail carried over its back. A soft, dense undercoat lies beneath the firm outer hairs. The FCI standard gives shoulder heights of 66 to 71 centimetres for males and 61 to 66 centimetres for females. The American Kennel Club gives approximate weights of 45 to 59 kilograms for males and 32 to 45 kilograms for females.

Many American Akitas form close family attachments and notice unfamiliar activity around them. When visitors arrive, the dog should have time to observe from a comfortable distance rather than being greeted immediately at the door. Conflict can arise particularly with dogs of the same sex. A puppy that enjoys canine playmates may become more selective as it matures. An adult should supervise children with the dog, and it should have a place where it can eat and rest undisturbed.

Everyday life

Shared walks, opportunities to explore scents and brief training sessions suit an American Akita. The pace should reflect its age, fitness and the weather. Its strength makes comfortable lead walking especially useful. Teaching it to walk on a loose lead and turn its attention towards you around distractions helps with later encounters. Food or another reward the dog enjoys can encourage the behaviour you want.

Walking routes with a clear view ahead make it easier to allow room around unfamiliar dogs. Enough distance helps keep an encounter calm before the dogs are directly facing each other. A crowded dog park with many unfamiliar animals is often a poor choice for this breed. Off lead exercise should take place within secure fencing. Many American Akitas have a strong prey drive and may chase an animal that runs away.

Before bringing one into a home with cats or small pets, you should assess its reactions carefully. If it chases a cat, watches it with an intense stare or becomes very excited at the sight of it, you should seek help from a qualified behaviour professional. It should be possible to separate the animals securely. Holiday care also needs someone experienced with this dog. A Fellfolio handover can share suitable walking routes, feeding arrangements and advice for encounters with the person providing care.

Staying home alone

Dogs learn to stay home alone in small steps. The RSPCA advises no more than four hours at a time. Puppies and dogs that become unsettled when left alone need shorter absences and gradual practice. Arrange someone to care for your dog when you will be away longer.

Day-to-day care

A thorough weekly brush helps remove loose hair from the dense coat. During seasonal shedding, undercoat may come out in large clumps. More frequent brushing then helps prevent loose hair from collecting in the coat. Several brief grooming sessions are easier to fit into daily life than a lengthy one that leaves the dog impatient.

Grooming also provides an opportunity to check the skin. Scaling, bald areas or a marked change in coat texture should be investigated. Overgrown nails can interfere with walking, so paws, ears and teeth need regular attention too. Brushing with dog toothpaste should be introduced gradually, beginning with brief touches around the lips and teeth. If the dog has ear problems, its vet can show you an appropriate care routine. Cotton buds should not be inserted into the ear canal.

Size and build

A puppy can begin learning through everyday activities. Putting on a harness, accepting a brief brush and waiting beside you are useful first exercises. New people and dogs should be introduced in calm surroundings. Meeting many dogs does not by itself teach a puppy to feel at ease. It should have time to observe unfamiliar things and build positive experiences.

Watchfulness and conflict with other dogs may become more apparent as it matures. Walks and care arrangements should respond to the behaviour you actually see. A suitable training class or individual help can support that work. Short explorations and play at the puppy’s own pace suit its developing body. Prolonged forced running and repeated high jumps should be avoided during growth.

Older American Akitas often benefit from shorter routes, floors with good grip and easily reached beds. Difficulty getting up or less interest in walking should prompt an assessment for pain. The American Kennel Club gives ten to fourteen years as a guide to life expectancy.

Health

Before choosing a puppy, you should ask for an explanation of its parents’ health assessments. The Akita Club of America recommends hip, eye and thyroid examinations. With hip dysplasia, the hip joint is not sufficiently stable. Pain and arthritis can develop. Screening results therefore offer useful information even when the parents appear to move comfortably during a visit.

Sebaceous adenitis is another condition reported in Akitas. It causes inflammation of the skin’s oil glands. The coat may become scaly, change in texture and develop areas of hair loss. Such changes should be examined by a vet rather than assumed to be ordinary shedding.

Gastric dilatation and volvulus, often called a twisted stomach, is an important emergency. The stomach fills with gas and may rotate, impairing circulation. Unproductive retching, marked restlessness or a suddenly swollen abdomen require immediate veterinary help. Emergency contacts should be prepared in advance. Fellfolio can keep results, medication and observations together in the pet’s profile. An emergency card makes important information easier for another person to find quickly.

Could this breed fit your life?

Could work well if …

  • You have experience with powerful dogs and can manage canine encounters safely.
  • You want to spend plenty of time with your dog and use reward based training.
  • You can provide secure exercise and care by people who know the dog well.

What to consider

  • Conflict with other dogs may become more apparent as it matures.
  • Prey drive makes unrestricted exercise and living with small animals more difficult.
  • Seasonal shedding releases plenty of undercoat that needs regular brushing.

Similar needs, different dogs.
