Alert, fast and close to its people

The Malinois is the short-coated variety of the Belgian Shepherd Dog. Its herding background also led to work with police and search teams. It notices movement quickly and is keen to respond to cues. That attention can be rewarding at home, but visitors, noisy children and passing bikes must not become problems the dog tries to handle on its own.

Practise greetings and waiting on a mat in small steps. Reward a calm look before the dog jumps or barks. Harsh handling will not make an alert dog more reliable; it may increase tension just when the situation is already exciting.

Day-to-day care

The Malinois has a short, dense outer coat and an undercoat. Brush out loose hair once or twice a week, more often during heavy shedding. The coat offers some protection in wet or cold weather, but the dog still needs a warm, dry place to rest after a long outing.

After work in rough vegetation, check feet, nails and the inner ears for small injuries or grass seeds. Driven dogs may keep going despite a scrape. Early, relaxed practice with handling helps you notice a change before it becomes painful.

Health

The Royal Kennel Club recommends hip and elbow grading and eye examinations for breeding dogs. Hip and elbow dysplasia are developmental abnormalities of the joints. They can cause pain and early arthritis. Ask for both parents’ actual X-ray results, not simply the assurance that they were “checked”. Ask too whether epilepsy, heart disease or cancers have occurred in siblings or earlier litters; the American breed club specifically recommends this discussion.

Repeated limping, stiffness after exercise or sudden reluctance to rise needs a veterinary examination. If the dog has a seizure, make the area safe and call a vet promptly. Short, controlled games suit a growing Malinois better than frequent jumps or long runs while its joints and muscles are still developing.
